Cape Verde is a group of ten volcanic islands off the coast of West Africa (the islands are nearest to Senegal) and was uninhabited until the Portuguese established a colony here in the 15th century.
Positioned within easy access of America, Europe and Africa, its location has been a primary factor in the country's development over the years – in the past as a major port on the slave route and more recently as a destination for international tourism.
While the islands gained independence in 1975, they maintain strong economic, cultural and political ties with Portugal and the colonial legacy is still very much in evidence, particularly in the pretty houses of Mindelo on the island of São Vicente.
