The natural features of the islands are the biggest attraction. With sunshine all year round, Cape Verde is the closest tropical islands group to Europe and with the growth in cheap flights has become increasingly accessible over the years.
The islands' incredible beaches, awe-inspiring mountains (including an active volcano on one of the uninhabited islands) and clear seas are perhaps unsurprisingly a big draw for tourists and investors alike.
Widely tipped as the next holiday hotspot, Cape Verde offers a playground for a wide variety of interests including hiking, fishing, diving, sailing, surfing or just enjoying the pleasures of some of some outstanding beaches. Golf lovers can expect four new championship golf courses due for completion by 2010.
It's a welcoming and hospitable country with a vibrant culture that mixes African and Portuguese influences in equal measure. Food, dancing and music all have an idiosyncratic Cape Verdean flavour, and the islands are particularly proud of their biggest musical export, Cesària Évora.
As you would expect, the passions of the islanders are reflected in a buzzing nightlife with an inclusive "good time" atmosphere and plenty of great bars and restaurants to choose from.
